For each group, the functional group determines what the resin removes and how strongly it will bind to those ions.
This type has sulfonic acid groups that exchange hydrogen or sodium ions for positively charged ions in water. Where this differs from a weak base resin is that strong base resins remain charged and active across a wide range of pH levels.
Another use for this resin is silica removal. It can remove weakly ionised acids, including silica, that could otherwise cause problems in high-pressure industrial boilers.

Our fourth and final type of ion exchange resin is weak base anion resins. This particular resin is an acid absorber, as opposed to a salt splitter. The main functional group attached to the resin is typically a tertiary amine.
In terms of applications, it’s commonly used in demineralisation for the removal of strong acids such as sulfuric, hydrochloric and nitric acids.
Within wastewater treatment, it can remove strong acids from industrial rinse water in metal finishing, and it also has applications within the pharmaceutical industry.
A great advantage of a weak base anion resin is that it has both high physical and chemical stability, along with a high resistance to organic fouling.
